CLASS OF 2024-25 | MEET JOSH ATKINSON

Josh Atkinson is the eighth player to be promoted to the Dartford First Team by Ady Pennock this season.

The 18-year-old goalkeeper has impressed the Dartford boss and his coaching staff during pre-season, and has been called up as a backup to number one Jacob Marsden. And the right-footed youngster was delighted at being promoted…

“I’m really happy to be promoted to the First Team Chris. To sign for such a great club is a really proud moment for me. I’m very thankful to be given this opportunity to, hopefully, show everyone my ability at First Team level.”

Josh has been in the Academy for a couple of seasons, after having a brief spell at the club when he was younger. His journey also saw him play for Corinthians FC’s U18s side during his first year with the Darts. His story is another testament to the success of the Academy, and he intends to bring hard work and dedication to training, as well as communication on the pitch and big saves when called upon.

And the club as a whole holds a special place in the young goalkeeper’s heart…

“With me living close to Dartford, this club has always been a big part of my life. That’s even more so with being in the Academy here. The Academy has helped me improve my game massively over the years, thanks to the coaches developing my understanding of the game. They’ve shown trust and confidence in my abilities, and have allowed me to perform at a higher level, which has lead to me achieving my goal of signing for the First Team. Now, I’ll be looking to continue to improve myself with every session.”

And, how did he find out that Ady wanted him to be a part of his plans?

“I was first told by Ben Greenhalgh that Ady wanted to speak with me. So, when I arrived at training, the gaffer pulled me into his office and told me that he wanted to promote me into the First Team. I was over the moon Chris, and so grateful to be given this opportunity.”

He continues, “My main goal when joining the Academy was to reach the First Team. Now that I’m here, the gaffer expects hard work and the right attitude from all of us every single game as a minimum. This gives us a foundation to push on to get the results in order for us to have the best opportunity to be right up there challenging for promotion by the end of the season.”

Of course, this can’t be achieved without the twelfth player, the supporters. And Josh has a few words for the Dartford faithful as well…

“Your amazing support will be massive in helping us get this club back to where we belong. So, please stick with us until the end.”
