Mean defence can make it a Happy Xmas and New Year for DFC Women

womens update

Three big matches in November, no goals conceded. It’s music to the ears of DFC Women’s Co-Manager Martin McCarthy.

Now he hopes the momentum continues and the music keeps playing, with a Wonderful Christmastime on the cards if the squad keeps performing in the same vein.

He said: “We went through November without conceding a goal in the major games which is a big plus for us. We are going into Christmas in a really good run of form.

“We have a good set of games coming up in December and we will be looking to do the same during this period, keeping it tight at the back.

“It will be a great Christmas if we can keep this run going and it will set us up nicely for the New Year.”

The past month has seen some brilliant performances from the Women’s side, including a 7-0 win against Sport London E Benfica, a 1-0 win at home to Dorking and a 4-0 win at home to Bromley. It’s put them in a perfect position looking forward.

Martin continued: “We are where we want to be. We are top of the league and through to the last 16 of two cup competitions.

“We are starting to find our form now. We didn’t quite hit the heights of last year at the beginning of the season, but it’s really starting to click now.

“Even against Ebbsfleet at the end of October. We were a player down for 70 minutes after a sending-off, but a draw was an unbelievable result. We were 1-0 up on 89 minutes.

“But the new players are finding their feet and we are giving a lot of game time now to the whole squad, with players coming in even getting ‘player of the match’ awards.”

DFC Women are now also seeing a rise in attendances as word continues to get out about their performances and results.

He continued: “When we started the season, we were getting 90 to 100 supporters, but on one of the last matches it was 180. Against Ebbsfleet it was 289. It’s really good. We are seeing a lot of the male season ticket holders on a Saturday turning up to see what it’s all about.

“A lot of these fans are saying if they have a free Sunday, they want to come down and take a look. It’s great for the club and for the Women’s side to see this happening.”

For now, it’s a positive outlook, with the team hoping results and performances in December will match those of November.

Martin added: “We are still taking every game as it comes, but if we can continue like this, we’ll be very happy. We are confident. We look hungry. The changing room is good. The club is in a good place. And there’s no reason why we shouldn’t keep this run going and have a successful season from there.”
