MY MOST MEMORABLE SEASON – Luke Morrish

Luke Morrish played for Dartford from 1998-1999 to 2001-2002.
He made 157 starting appearances, scoring 9 goals.

What is your most memorable season in a Dartford shirt?
I cannot recall what year it was but for me it had to be the year we played Gravesend and Northfleet (as they were called at the time) in the FA Cup.

    (2001/02 season)

Why does this season stand out for you?
I was made Captain that year and to lead the team out in that FA Cup clash where they had to delay kick off by half an hour due to the amount of people trying to get in to watch the game….the buzz around the ground and the atmosphere was fantastic and despite being a lower division to them we played our hearts out and was only undone by a dodgy penalty decision….

The manager that season was Gary Julians. What was it like working under Gary?

I liked Gary he was not everyone’s cup of tea but I liked his passion for the game and he was always honest with people and wore his heart on his sleeve which I like. Mickey Crowe was also a big influence on me and was one of the main reasons I grew as a player and became captain of my hometown club which I used to watch as a young boy on the stands.

Who would you say was Dartford’s standout player that season?

I would say Danny Evans and Lee Jones. They turned up week in and week out and were always 7 out of 10s and above.

Why do you think we did so well that season?

I think we had a good mix of youth and experience were tough to break down and had my brother up front who I know if had half a chance he would get us a goal.

Do you have a favourite goal you scored for Dartford?

Yes the one that stands out for me was the equaliser against Raunds Town. I was known to usually score with my head but on this occasion I had stayed up from a set piece and the ball came to me and whipped it towards the far post from outside the box and went in the top corner. I think their manager joked about being relieved a centre half was taking the shot until it went in!!

Do you still keep in touch with any of the team from that season?

Well naturally by brother and yes the likes of Clayton Probets, Chris Arnold, but mainly on social media than actually seeing them.

Did anything unusual happen that season that you can share with the fans?

Two come to mind. One was where we decided to come out of the tunnel for the game with wrestling music playing in the background – Triple H, its’ time to play the game. Never seen players so pumped lol. The other one was Garry Julians kicking the dug out breaking the plastic and getting his leg stuck!

Loved my time at the Darts….
